Sympoiesis: original-copies
Sympoiesis means “to make together.” It implies acting in a collaborative manner. This exhibition reflects on the collaboration between beings, a concept that Donna J. Haraway described as sympoietic arrangements — realities that conceive themselves in development with, or in the company of…
In contrast, humanity has strayed from these principles, becoming embroiled in ecological destruction and disastrous power dynamics of the Anthropocene. Terms like Capitalocene and Plantationocene emerge from this logic of human superiority, exceptionalism, ethnocentrism, and anthropocentrism. They promote human supremacy over nature and other human beings, failing to recognize that human existence relies on interdependent relationships and symbiotic exchanges.
The exhibition highlights the interdependence of living beings and the importance of symbiotic exchanges for the planet’s survival. Inspired by thinkers like Henry David Thoreau who lived in harmony with nature, and William Morris who advocated simplicity and manual-labour, Sympoiesis proposes a return to creations that are honest and necessary.
The artists and designers in the exhibition explore themes of serendipity, randomness, copy and originality in the act of creation / production. The exhibition promotes a new collaborative perspective on Nature. Through co-creation, Sympoiesis invites visitors to recognize the importance of this interdependence and to reflect on how systems and beings develop together. With an indication that nothing is completely independent.
